This series focuses on our identities through portraiture. I intend for this work to analyze our personal characteristics as I manipulate the portraits into an origami fold known as the “cootie catcher”, a children’s fortune telling game.
I apply the idea to my photographs by exposing the portrait onto the three dimensional arrangement of folds. This process is done in the darkroom where I fold the paper and expose the image four separate times. Once the image is developed I fold it back into the fortuneteller form, allowing the viewer to see only bits and pieces of the portrait's identity.
Astrological forecasts follow a certain path and pattern to reveal a fortune and create an identity for each and every one of us. Shaped Identity, similar to horoscopes, analyzes and follows a prearranged pattern in order to be formed. Whether or not you believe this system, my photographs are designed to question our individuality and simulate the playful gratification of a horoscope visually.
